Binding and Loosing

If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, you have his power and authority to bind evil and loose God’s plans in any situation. in his name.

Why do we bind?

Jesus commented on the need for binding evil. He explained that we must first bind the strongman before we can plunder his house.  “Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.” (Matthew 12:29)

When we are facing an evil stronghold in life, we must first use our inherited authority as children of God to bind the evil forces involved. After that, we can loose, or call forth God’s plans for restoration. When we bind something, we declare it unlawful (or evil) based on God’s word. As we stand as co-heirs in Jesus Christ, we have his authority to execute this judgment on the forces of evil. (Psalm 149:5-9)

“Let the saints be joyful in glory;
Let them sing aloud on their beds.
Let the high praises of God be in their mouth,
And a two-edged sword in their hand,
To execute vengeance on the nations,
And punishments on the peoples;
To bind their kings with chains,
And their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute on them the written judgment—
This honor have all His saints.”

Our faith in God’s word releases the power from heaven that binds (or ties up) the evil we are facing. Similarly, when we loose something on earth, we “permit and declare it proper and lawful on earth” based on the scriptures. Everything that we loose or bind must be in accordance with God’s word.

When we bind spirits – or demons – that does not mean we don’t need to cast them out. We still do, but to bind them will stop them from acting temporarily for some reason so they can afterwards be cast out.

What happens when we bind?

Jesus said: “Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:18-19)

When we bind something, we declare it unlawful (or evil) based on God’s word. Because we stand as co-heirs in Jesus Christ, we have his authority to execute this judgment on the forces of evil. (Psalm 149:5-9).

Our faith in God’s word releases the power from heaven that binds (or ties up) the evil we are facing. Similarly, when we loose something on earth, we “permit and declare [it] proper and lawful on earth” based on the scriptures. Everything that we loose or bind must be in accordance with God’s word.

“And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 16:19)

“Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18)

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19)

Binding the enemy’s plans; loosing God’s plans

This is based on the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:10. First we bind the plans of evil in the situation we are facing in the name of Jesus Christ. Then, we call forth God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

“Father in heaven, I stand in faith on the authority I have as a believer in Jesus Christ, and a co-heir to his kingdom. In the name of Jesus Christ, I bind every evil spirit and every evil plan made in this situation. I cancel the enemy’s plans and call forth God’s plans for this situation. God’s word says that God has plans for good and not evil (Jeremiah 29:11) for us and I claim those plans now. Father, I ask that your will be done in this situation, as it is done in heaven. I give thanks and praise to you. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

Simple binding prayer

“Father, I thank you for sending your Son Jesus to die for me, and resurrecting him to sit at your right hand in Heaven right now. I thank you for bestowing upon Him all power and authority over evil. In the name of Jesus Christ, I speak to any evil spirits, especially spirits of* ___________, ___________, ___________, (fill in the blanks), I bind you from attacking me now and throughout this day. Leave me now and go straight to Jesus Christ who will deal with you. I am covered and protected by the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you Lord for delivering me. Amen.”

*Note that evil spirits often have specific functions and names. Examples of evil spirits include lust, adultery, pride, despair, strife, anger, unforgiveness, discouragement, condemnation, shame, hate, envy, covetousness, idolatry, homosexuality, suicide, obsession, oppression, domination, control and witchcraft. These are just a few of the many possible spirits. Or it will work to say something like “….any demons causing ___________”.

What does binding do to demons?

Binding is like a temporary spiritual handcuffing. You can bind a demon spirit, much like tying something up with rope or chains. You cannot bind a person’s free will, but you can bind the demons affecting or influencing that person. Binding is not the same practice as casting out demons, as casting out demons brings forth lasting results, whereas binding is only to tie them down for a period of time.

If you are trying to talk to or minister to somebody, and they seem impossible to get through to it can be helpful to bind up the spirits inside that person, which will effectively handcuff the enemy so you can directly and effectively minister to that person without having them continually held back by the enemy’s interference.

What does it mean for something to be bound in heaven?

If you look up the word ‘heaven’ in the Greek, you’ll find another word called ‘air’, which is where the spirits dwell. The Bible also says that we are seated with Christ in heavenly places. This isn’t referring to heaven as in the place we go after we die, but rather a realm. The Bible tells us that we are seated in the heavenly realm with Christ: “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:6)

We, as humans, were below the angels and demons, but as believers, we are now seated above the angelic realm and seated with Christ. So the word ‘heaven’ here is referring to the spiritual realm, the air, where the spirits dwell and operate. In Ephesians 2:2, Satan is known as the ‘prince of the power of the air’.

Therefore, when you bind something here on earth, it will be bound in the spiritual realm as well. This gives us the ability to bind demons, because they dwell within the spiritual realm.

Binding is a powerful witnessing tool

What keeps a person from accepting Jesus? The god of this world, which is Satan (working through his army of demons) has blinded their minds from the light of the gospel. (2 Corinthians 4:4) Jesus taught us to bind the strong man, then we can plunder his house: “No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.” (Mark 3:27)

If you have been trying to witness to somebody, and seem to be getting nowhere, try binding the spirits of darkness that are preventing that person from seeing the light in the gospel. You cannot bind a person’s will or force them to accept the gospel, but you can do something about the demons which are holding the person back. Once you take the demons out of the picture, you will be able to talk directly to that person without demons whispering in their ears and trying to combat what you are telling them.

Binding the enemy’s plans; loosing Gods plans

This is based on the Lord’s prayer in Matthew 6:10: “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

“Father, I thank you for sending your Son Jesus to die for me, and resurrecting him to sit at your right hand in Heaven right now. I thank you for bestowing upon Him all power and authority over evil. In the name of Jesus Christ, I speak to any evil spirits [especially spirits of* _____________, _____________, _____________, fill in the blanks] I bind you from attacking me now and throughout this day. Leave me now in the name of Jesus. I am covered and protected by the blood of Jesus. Amen.”

*Note that evil spirits often have specific functions and names. Examples of evil spirits include lust, adultery, pride, despair, strife, anger, unforgiveness, discouragement, condemnation, shame, hate, envy, covetousness, idolatry, homosexuality, suicide, obsession, oppression, domination, control and witchcraft. These are just a few of the many possible spirits and lists of demons can be found on this blog and elsewhere on the internet.

The blood of Jesus Christ is a powerful weapon for protection from the enemy’s attacks. The following prayer is a good one to pray before starting the day:

“Lord, I cover myself and everyone around me with the blood of Jesus. I cover all of the members of my family [call them by name] with the blood of Jesus. I cover my home, my land, my car, my finances, my marriage, with the blood of Jesus. In the name of Jesus Christ, by the power of His blood, I break off every power of the kingdom of darkness and cancel every argument in heaven that has established itself against the plans of God in my life and spoil every attack of the enemy. I call forth, in the name of Jesus, all of God’s plans and purposes for my life, and my family. As for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord. Satan, the blood of Jesus is against you and you have no authority over my life. NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST ME (OR MY FAMILY) SHALL PROSPER!”

We can loose spirits of God into our life or the lives of others, using the name of Jesus:

Loosing Spirits of God

We can loose spirits of God into our life or the lives of others, using the name of Jesus:

In the name of Jesus Christ, I bind every spirit that is not the spirit of God. I break their power and command them to leave me now in the mighty name of Jesus.

Father, I ask in the name of your precious Son that you would send ministering spirits to me.  In the name of Jesus, please loose Your spirits of:

  4. jonathan lear flaum says:

Be careful that You are meant by G-D to bind and loose
In the Book of Acts the evil spirit said Paul I know and Jesus I know But WHO ARE YOU

    • jennyisbonkers says:

The reason the evil spirit said that was because the exorcists were not believers in / followers of Jesus and so therefore they did not have His authority to cast out demons in His name.

In the last paragraph you speak of asking God to send ministering spirits. Do you mean angels or do you mean the one true Holy Spirit who ministers all good things to us.

A great article though, and very helpful, thank you.

  9. Sarah Cathey says:

Could not it refer to binding sickness? And loosing angels to minister to the sick? Is not this what Jesus and the apostles did all day? Aren’t we supposed to so it? Isn’t that the Kingdom also?
